The “most wonderful time of the year” can also sometimes be the most hectic. And now, with screens and devices always within reach, it can be easy to miss out on the entire season because you’re so engrossed in what’s going on online.
As an internet company, we can’t really whole-heartedly advocate for taking a total tech break over the next few days. Instead, we have a few tried and true pointers for keeping things on an even keel—especially if you have kiddos in the house.
1. Make hard and fast rules and stick them: Be the master of your own destiny. If you want to enjoy a family supper without the distraction of phones, set a clear expectation a day or more before, and stick to it. Plan the meal out and make sure everyone has something to keep them engaged the whole time. Stick to your guns when the time comes!
2. Make screen time a reward, not a right: Get kids into the spirit of the season by encouraging them to help out around the house and do good deeds. You can create a sticker chart to track their progress, and make 10 minutes of screen time as reward for each sticker.
3. Be aware of your own screen habits: Let’s be honest, the holidays can be hectic and taxing. But one good example can be all it takes for everyone to rise to the occasion. If you don’t want people to disappear down the tech rabbit hole, don’t do it yourself.
Good luck! And of course, Happy Holidays from all of us at GWI. We’re grateful for our internet and phone customers here in our home state of Maine everyday, but especially so at this time of year.
