With a little luck, you’ll never need to know anything about pluerodesis procedures. Nor will you then ever need to know what a PleuraBlade is.
But here’s why you should still pay attention: According to NASDAQ, the global market for medical devices is currently growing at roughly 5% per year, poised to reach $800 billion by 2030. The US is the largest medical device market in the world, set to bring in $120 billion in revenue this year alone.
That’s why it’s a good thing when medical device companies start popping up here in Maine. So while you or I may never full understand what the PleuraBlade, which is made by Portland-based Butterfield Technologies, is actually for, we can still celebrate that it’s a homegrown product with a potentially global market. (Incidentally, it’s a tool for cardiothoracic surgeons used to encourage layers of lung tissue to re-bond.)
