SHARE YOUR FAMILY PHOTOS ON THE WEB

Maybe your daughter just graduated, your son won the big game, your first grandchild has just been born, or you just returned from your dream vacation -- whatever the occasion, you can share your special moments with family and friends across the country over the Internet. And it’s easy too!

Step 1: Getting photos into digital format

Unless you have a digital camera, or your pictures printed on a photo CD, you will need to scan your printed photo onto your computer with a scanner.

Step 2: Resize the image

When you scan your photo, the resulting image is often too large for use on the Internet. Most scanners come with photo retouching software that allows you to resize images. In general, your photos should be no larger than:

  • 620 pixels wide
  • 460 pixels high
  • 10-20 kb
Step 3: Save the photo as JPG

Use your retouching software to save your photo as a JPG file (.jpg). Photos should always be in JPG format as this keeps the gradation of colors in the photo and makes them look better. JPG photos are also small in size, which helps in uploading time.

Step 4: Putting your photo on the Internet

You have two options for sharing your photos on the Internet, you can create your own personal website or you can email them.

Personal Website:

Your GWI dial-up account includes 10mb of space for your personal website. This is the perfect place to display your family photos. Visit GWI’s website (www.gwi.net) to find instructions on creating and uploading your website (see “Web Page Help” under the Technical Support section). Once your site is up, email the address to your family and friends.

Email:

This option is best if you only have a few people that you want to send your photos to. Simply create your email message, type your text and select “attach” in the menu or toolbar (button has a paperclip in most email programs). Then locate and select the file containing the photo you want to attach. When you send your email, the photo will go with it. Since it takes longer to download emails with photos attached, you should limit yourself to sending one or two photos at a time.
