You can file your federal income tax return right online with the IRS' e-file program. Here’s how it works:
- You will need software, which can be purchased, downloaded from the Internet or accessed online. The IRS provides a list of software programs on their website at http://www.irs.gov/elec_svs/company.html.
- The software will lead you through the forms you need to complete. Then you simply transmit the forms to the IRS. There is no fee from the IRS for this service, however there may be a fee from the company doing the transmitting. Check out the IRS website for free and low cost services.
- You do not need to submit paper Forms W-2, W-2G and Form 1099-R to the IRS if you e-file.
- If you have no paper forms to submit, you can use a self-selected PIN as your signature and eliminate paper altogether. Make sure you choose a software package that supports this option.
- If you owe money, you can pay by credit card, automatic withdrawal from your checking or savings account, or by mailing a check or money order. If you choose to mail a check, you will need to send it in with Form 1040-V.
- After your return is received, the transmitter will inform you whether or not the return was accepted or rejected by the IRS. If rejected, you may need to correct and retransmit.
- Your refund will be in your checking or savings account in 2 weeks if you choose direct deposit, or will be in the mail in 3 weeks should you choose to receive a check. You can even check the status of your refund from the IRS website.
