HOW TO SHOP SAFELY ONLINE

Shopping online can be fun, easy and convenient, and there are some good deals to be found on the Internet. However, it is important to follow a few safety practices while shopping online to ensure that your experience is a positive one.

Use a Secure Browser

Use a browser that complies with industry security standards, such as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). These standards scramble the purchase information sent over the Internet, helping to secure your transaction. SSL works with Netscape 2.0 and above and Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 and above. If you are using an older version of these browsers, you should upgrade.

You can verify you're on a secure page by looking at the URL in the browser window. If SSL is in effect, it will begin with “https”, rather than the typical “http”. Also, with Netscape you should see a blue closed padlock (on a gold/yellow background) in the bottom left-hand corner of your browser. If you are using Internet Explorer, a gold closed padlock symbol will appear in the bottom right-hand corner of the browser.

Know the Company

If you're unfamiliar with a merchant, request a printed catalog or brochure to get a better idea of their merchandise and services. Verify their physical mailing address and phone number and determine the company's refund and return policies before you place your order. This information should be posted on the company's website.

Protect Your Password

Be creative when you create a password, and never give it to anyone. Using a random combination of numbers, letters, and symbols is safer than using more common information like a telephone number or birth date.

Pay by Credit Card

When you pay by credit or charge card online, your transaction is protected by the Fair Credit Billing Act. This law gives you the right to dispute charges under certain circumstances and temporarily withhold payment during the creditor's investigation. In cases of fraud and unauthorized use of your card, you are generally held liable only for the first $50 in charges and some cards provide additional warranty, return and/or purchase protection benefits.

Keep Good Records

Be sure to print a copy of your purchase order and confirmation number for your records and any guarantees on the company's website regarding shipping time, customer service, return policies, etc. Write down details of any phone conversations, including dates, times, and the name of the person you spoke with, and save any paperwork sent to you.
