ONLINE AUCTIONS: TIPS FOR BUYERS & SELLERS

Looking for that rare collectable or a good deal on a camera? Have an old lamp or stamp collection you are looking to sell? Online auctions can be just the key...but buyer and seller beware. Along with the increased popularity of online auctions has come increased Internet auction fraud. Here are some tips to help you protect yourself while bidding or selling online.

Tips for the Buyer:

Know the Seller: Identify the seller and check the seller's feedback rating from other buyers.

Know the Product: Do your homework. Be sure you understand what you're bidding on, its relative value and all terms and conditions of the sale, including the seller's return policies and who pays for shipping.

Proceed on Bidding with Caution: Establish your top price and stick to it. Remember that if you're the highest bidder, you are obligated to follow through with the transaction.

Evaluate your payment options: Use a credit card if possible as they offer the most protection if there's a problem. Consider using an escrow service if the seller doesn't accept credit cards.

Tips for the Seller:

Advertising Your Product: Provide a detailed, accurate description of the item you are selling. Include all terms of the sale including who will pay the shipping costs and your return policy.

Respond to any questions bidders may raise during the auction as soon as possible.

Contact the winning bidder as soon as possible after the auction closes to finalize details of the sale.

Ship the merchandise within the time frame designated through the auction. If no time frame is specified, 30 days is typically acceptable.

What to do if you have Problems:

Try to work it out directly with the seller/buyer or the auction website.

File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. You can do this by calling toll-free 1-877-FTC-HELP (382-4357) or visiting the FTC's website at www.ftc.gov. Although the Commission cannot resolve individual problems for consumers, it can act against an individual or company if it sees a pattern of possible law violations.

Contact your state Attorney General (in Maine call 626-8849) or your local consumer protection office.
