Frequently Asked Questions

1. I know I have space at GWI. What can I do with it?
Your dial-up account comes with 40 MB of space to use for both email and your personal web page located at home.gwi.net/~username (where "username" is your GWI username). You can use this space to put up a website or to place files for use with ebay. Keep in mind that if you use too much of this quota for your personal web page, you may have diffficulty receiving email. For more information, see our Quota Information page.

2. How do I create my website?
You can create your own website using a variety of site development tools. We have developed a simple format to use to create your site, and links to get the tools you will need.

Depending on your experience and preference, you can choose from a wide range of programs to create a website. If you know how to write HTML code, you may want to use an HTML editor such as notepad (PC) or simpletext (Mac). You may also want to try a graphic interface/layout program such as FrontPage or Adobe GoLive, which allow you to use drag-and-drop features to design web pages without having to write code.

3. How do I put my website up on the web?
When your website is complete, you will need to FTP (File Transfer Protocol) your files to our server. Most web design programs have FTP functionality. You can also use FTP only programs such as WS-FTP or CuteFTP. You will need GWI's FTP settings to complete the transfer. Also, if you need help setting up your FTP program, please visit our Software Set-up section.

4. Can I use CGI and perl scripts on my website?
Yes, you can use both CGI and perl scripts on your website to have a guest book, counters or forms. You will want to upload these scripts to your cgi-bin directory. If you are looking for a counter to put on your website, check out the counters that GWI offers.
