Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are viruses and how do I protect myself against them?
A virus is a small program designed to execute instructions when opened. These instructions compromise your computer's integrity, and can cause you to lose valuable data. They can come in many forms including email attachments, downloads and the exchange of infected disks. Find out more about viruses and how to protect yourself against these potentially harmful programs.

2. Why doesn't my browser display pages correctly?
If you are using an older browser, you may encounter problems when viewing web pages. Many older browsers do not support the latest features being used in web page design. Also, older browsers may not be Y2K compliant.

Because most browser manufacturers do not provide updates (patches) or support for their older versions, your best course of action is to upgrade your browser to a more current version.

3. What are the different search engines and how do I choose one?
There are many different search engines to choose from. Depending on your search criteria and preferences, certain search engines may provide better results than others. Attached is a list of search engines for you to try, and some tips on making your searches more effective.

4. Can I use my GWI connection to get to my other online services such as AOL, MSN TV/WebTV or Netpliance?
Yes, many of our members use their GWI connection to access these services. Because these services are provided nationally, there is not always a local number available to dial in to them. This is why many of our members that use these services use GWI to get the local connection and avoid long distance charges. See our instructions on connecting to AOL through GWI. You may also visit MSN TV/WebTV or Netpliance for more information about accessing their services.

5. Can I access my email or use the Internet through GWI when I am traveling?
With GWI's Travel Access Service, you can dial in to GWI using a special dial-up number and access your email or surf the Internet. This service does cost an additional $.09 per minute, and the time you use each month will be billed on your regular monthly statement.
