HOW TO OPEN AN ATTACHMENT WITH OUTLOOK EXPRESS

Is your Outlook Express set up? If not, go to our Software Set-up Section first. Choose version 4.0 or 5.0 depending on which one you have. If so, continue with these instructions.

Let's say you just logged on and checked mail. You have one new message with an attachment. It would look something like this. The paperclip indicates the email has an attachment.

Click on the message as if to read it. This email doesn't have anything to read, but notice the paperclip on the bar between the two windows. Click on the paper clip to see your options.

You can either click on the file name to open it immediately or save the attachment to a folder. Something to remember: Certain files created by a particular program can only be opened by that program. If you receive a file created by a program you do not have, you will not be able to open this file.

Since this is an image, it can be displayed by many programs including your web browser. We will choose to save this file to a folder.

Click on save. Notice where I am saving the file. I am saving it in My Documents. You can save these files wherever you choose.

I have a My Documents folder on my desktop. I open My Documents and double-click on the file. I have Microsoft Photo Editor Associated with image files so by double-clicking it launches the program and I can see the image.

Smile! That's it. Something to keep in mind with forwarded emails to several recipients. When you choose to open rather than save, you will get a blank message window with an Attach field. You will see an envelope in that field. Double-click on the envelope and keep doing that until you see the message in the body of the message window.
