US ROBOTICS/3COM 56k MODEM

US Robotics, now owned by 3COM, makes their own unique chipset for their modems. While USR modems support the language X2 which GWI does not support, they tend to work very well with our system. USR Winmodems tend to not work quite as well with our equipment.

US Robotics has been very good about keeping their modem software updated. If you have an older modem, check to make sure it has the latest update.

Descriptions of Commands:

  • AT: Modem Attention command. Not used through the Windows 95/98/NT Modems Control Panel
  • Fast Retrain: A special setting only found in USR modems. It is supposed to allow the modem to react to line noise quickly. Usually it causes disconnections instead. GWI recommends that you use this code to turn it off.
  • Error Control: This is a built in setting that allows the modem to deal with errors. In some very rare situations, this will go overboard and disconnect the modem. If you have tried limiting the speed, as well as disabling fast retrains, but are still getting disconnected, try disabling the error control. Normally you should leave it on (by not using this command).
  • Language/Maxspeed: This setting allows you to force the modem to use a particular language to connect, as well as the ability to select a maximum speed for that connection. The v.90 language in many modems is known to be too aggressive, requiring that you use a command to force the modem to connect a little slower to stabilize the connection and improve its reliability. If you notice frequent disconnections, or have problems getting connected, set a maximum speed using this command. If you don't set a maximum speed, at least disable the X2 language, as it is incompatible with GWI's servers.
