The Rockwell HCF chipset is a type of Winmodem chipset used by a number of different modem manufacturers. Companies such as Compaq and Hewlett-Packard have used the Rockwell HCF modem in many of their computer systems. Zoltrix, Diamond Multimedia (Supra) and AcerOpen (AOpen) also market Rockwell HCF modems.
The Rockwell HCF modem is known to have certain issues when connecting at speeds higher than 45333 bits/second. In many cases they just will not connect above this speed reliably. GWI recommends trying to limit the modem to 45333 or lower if you have been having problems getting connected, getting disconnected or experiencing pauses while downloading files.
There appears to be a problem with older versions of the HCF software that causes the modem to not connect if limited to 33.6k. The modem will dial, start to connect, but instead of the normal connection noises, a long tone will sound. If this happens to you, try limiting the connection speed to a low v.90 speed instead. Currently, the latest driver software we have found for this modem is available from the Zoltrix website. This software has been known to work with many varieties of HCF modems, but it is always best to try your modem manufacturer's software first.
