LUCENT TECHNOLOGY'S WINMODEM

The Lucent Technology's Winmodem (LT Winmodem or Lucent Winmodem) is another software-based modem. It has been marketed with several computer systems, including packages from AT&T, Compaq and Hewlett-Packard. It is often named something other than LT Winmodem or Lucent Winmodem in the Windows Modems Control Panel. The results of an ATI3 command to the modem will usually show that it is an LT Winmodem as well as the current version of the software it is using.

The single most important thing to do with an LT Winmodem is to make sure you are running the latest software for this modem. There is a very good site about LT Winmodems at http://808hi.com/56k/ltwin.htm where we got most of our information. You can also download the latest version of the software from their site.

LT Winmodems typically work quite well with our system once they are running the latest version of the software. As with many other 56k modems, they may require a slight adjustment and the setting of a maximum speed to perform their best.

Descriptions of Commands:

  • AT: Modem Attention command. Not used through the Windows 95/98/NT Modems Control Panel
  • Language/Maxspeed: This setting allows you to force the modem to use a particular language to connect, as well as the ability to select a maximum speed for that connection. The v.90 language in many modems is known to be too aggressive, requiring that you use a command to force the modem to connect a little slower to stabilize the connection and improve its reliability. If you notice frequent disconnections, or have problems getting connected, set a maximum speed using this command.

Note: The 0s in any of the commands are the number zero, not the letter O.

Note: If you have an old version of the LT Winmodem software, the above commands may lock up the modem and prevent it from dialing. If that is the case, try the command S38=0 by itself. Then upgrade to the newest software version.
