GWI QUOTA INFORMATION

A Quota is simply an allowance that cannot be exceeded. GWI's quota system automatically monitors our customers' quotas and is there to prevent abuse of the 40 megabyte limit. Also, by making sure that everyone stays within their quota, we ensure that all our customers have access to their space when they need it.

Many users who reach or exceed their quota do so without being aware of it. Usually this happens because they are saving email on our server after having already downloaded it (which is perfectly acceptable), but then forget to delete it every once in a while. Depending on their email habits, this can lead to a large amount of mail being stored on our server.

Why Should I Care if I Reach My Quota?

If you reach your quota, two things will happen. First, you will be unable to upload any additional files to your personal web space. But more importantly (to most), you will be unable to receive new email messages until you correct the problem.

If you reach your quota and someone sends you an email, the server will reject the message, returning it to the sender stating that you are over your quota. For this reason it is very important to keep an eye on your usage, in order to avoid interruptions in your email.

At GWI, we understand that your quota is probably not something you have on your mind often. For this reason, we will automatically notify you when you are nearing or have reached your quota.

When you reach 75% of your quota, GWI will send you an email as a friendly reminder that you are approaching your limit. At this point, you will still have about 10 megabytes of available space left on our server. However, if someone attempts to send you an email message that is greater than 10 megabytes, the message will be returned to the sender. You will not be able to receive an email message if it would put you over your quota.

When you receive this email, you can decide whether to remove some saved files from the server or pay to increase your quota. Learn more about Increasing your Quota.

If your usage continues to increase, you will receive another email as you get much closer to your quota. Learn more about the Hard Quota.

One other type of limit is known as the file quota, which limits the actual number of files you have stored on the server. This limit is proportionate to your disk quota. Learn more about File Quotas here.

Quota Hard Limit

If your usage continues to climb, you will receive another message from GWI when you reach 95% of your quota. At this point it is very likely that email messages may not be delivered, as you will not have enough room left on our server to store the messages. If you receive this email message, you should really consider removing files from our server or increasing your quota.

Once you reach your quota, you will unable to store new files on the server, whether it is new email messages or files in your personal web space. You will not be charged for reaching your quota and our system will not allow you to exceed it if you have previously been under your quota. However, the inconvenience of not receiving your email is a very good reason not to ignore these messages.

Quota File Limit

The "File" limit is another part of your quota. Instead of monitoring the amount of space you use on our server, it monitors the actual number of files you own. The default file limit is 8,192 files. It is very unlikely you will reach this limit unless you have a virus and are receiving thousands of small emails, or if you have an error in a CGI script on your home page that is creating files when it should not be.

Most users will never even come close to reaching the File limit. If you do reach this limit, your options are to remove some files from the server or increase your quota. For each additional 10 megabytes of space you purchase, your file limit will be increased by 2,048 files.

Increasing Your Quota & Billing Information

Your default quota is 40 megabytes. This can be increased at a cost of $10 per 10MB per month. For example, if you increase your quota to 50MB, this will add $10 per month to your GWI bill. If you lower your quota back to 40MB, this will decrease your monthly bill by $10. You may not lower your quota below 40MB.

You will not be charged any additional fees if you reach your quota. You will, however, be unable to upload new files or receive new email messages until you are back under your quota.

If you need to change your quota, you can do this online at any time through our Quota Modification page. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your quota, please contact our Technical Support Team.
