Connecting Healthcare and Elder Care to the Three Ring Binder

Posted on by Trevor Jones Bookmark and Share

With the construction of the Three Ring Binder in Maine, we have an opportunity to connect a variety of non-profit organizations to this exceptional broadband network, providing high speed internet access, phone services, and wide area network connections that are faster, better, and more reliable than traditional connections.

A portion of the funding provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (“ARRA”) provides for the construction of laterals to connect Community Anchor Institutions (“CAI”), which include institutions of government, higher education, medical care, and care for the elderly. The program is administered by Maine Fiber Company, the builder of the Three Ring Binder.

On Wednesday, February 23rd, at Point Lookout Resort in Northport, GWI hosted healthcare and elder care professionals for the second in a series of events  designed to help Maine CAI’s access this funding and connect their organization to this exciting new network.  Below, media from this program including a video and slides are included for the benefit of attendees as well as those who were unable to attend.

Segment 1: Overview on the Three Ring Binder

In this first segment, Fletcher Kittredge introduces GWI and provides background on the Three Ring Binder.  He also discusses the roles of Maine Fiber Company and Carriers like GWI in delivering high speed internet and broadband WAN services to customers, and introduces the Concept of Community Anchor Institutions.

Segment 2: Applying and Qualifying for Funding

In this clip, Colin Haley discusses the CAI application process and the key considerations Maine Fiber Company uses to evaluate applications.

Segment 3:  Putting Your Connection to Work

In the final clip, Trevor Jones contrasts the Three Ring Binder and New England Telehealth Consortium networks and discusses how organizations can put increased broadband connectivity to work, including hosted applications and cloud computing.
