In “industry-speak”, this service is referred to as naked DSL – a
service in which the customer is not provided with dial tone, but where
all the advantages of high-speed Internet service are retained on the
line.
Typically with traditional DSL, high speed data is separated from voice
by use of a splitter within the telephone network, creating sperarate
bands for carrying data and voice services. With naked DSL, the part of
the line supporting voice is not connected, so no dial tone is
available.
