MAIL SERVICES & ALIASES

GWI provides a number of different convenient and cost effective options for Internet mail.

Basic Mail Services

At GWI, we provide you with reliable mail servers that feature the latest SMTP and POP services. You can use these servers to send and receive Internet mail.

The standard method for using these servers is to connect to the server with a mail-reader client such as Eudora, Microsoft Outlook Express, or Netscape Communicator. Mail is delivered to the servers and is queued in a spool file until you connect and download your mail messages to your computer.

It is possible to either leave mail messages to be stored on the server or on your computer. The standard mail/web space quota is a spool of 40 megabytes. More space can be purchased for $10 per 10 megabytes per month. You can alter your current quota on our Quota Modification Page. If you exhaust your space, no further email can be delivered. We do this as a preventative measure against "nuking" or "mail bombing".

GWI will automatically delete all email (read or unread) after 180 days. You should download your email to your computer within 180 days of message receipt or they will be lost. Also, if all email messages in your Inbox remain unread for more than 120 days, they will be removed. You should set up your email client to always download email directly to your computer so you do not risk losing any email (this is typically the default setting).

With each Internet access account you get at least one email address (mailbox), however through the following options you can get additional email addresses:

Aliases

Your first option would be to get a mail alias, a free service we offer to all our customers. Aliases give the impression of having many more email addresses than you really do, although mail sent to your alias automatically gets delivered to your actual email address seamlessly.

Aliases are useful for small groups of people (families), or those who's email addresses are easy to misspell or difficult to remember.

Each valid email address/mailbox is permitted a maximum of six aliases. You cannot have an alias identical to one currently in use by another GWI customer. Contact our Techical Support Team at 800-229-2096 to set up your aliases.

Mailboxes

Your other option, is to purchase an additional mailbox. Mailboxes differ from aliases in that they are each unique accounts (albeit without dial-up privileges), and so offer far more privacy in the form of separate username and password. There are no restrictions on the number of mailboxes you can have, although they do cost $4.95 each per month.

Both aliases and mailboxes have the email address of username@gwi.net (where username is the name of the alias or mailbox) -- identical to the format for your current email address/mailbox.

You cannot have a mailbox name identical to one currently in use by another GWI customer. Please call our Sales Department at 866-494-2020 to add mailboxes to your existing dial-up account.

Advanced/Business Mail Services

Our basic mail services are suitable for individuals, families or small groups of people. For larger groups, the Internet organizes addresses by Internet domains. GWI offers full and sophisticated support for mail to Internet domains.

Domain Name Mail Services

Domain Names:

If your organization does not already have a domain, you can register your domain through GWI. As your domain host, GWI would also provide you with mail services for your domain.

Virtual Aliases:

If GWI hosts your domain, by default we set it up so that all mail for your domain comes to our servers. For this mail to be delivered correctly, we need to set up virtual aliases that will tell our server where to deliver your domain addressed mail. Please see our Domain Alias Request Form to request virtual aliases or for more information.

SMTP Mail Server:

If you wish to manage your own SMTP mail server for your domain, GWI can update your domain's information to make this happen.

You can find out more about SMTP, how it works and what is needed to set it up, by reviewing the attached SMTP information page. If you think SMTP mail delivery is right for your company, you can use our SMTP Request Form.
