FRONTPAGE EXTENSIONS

Anybody who has purchased Microsoft FrontPage and intends to use any of the extra features provided by the program will need to have FrontPage extensions installed on their Virtual Web Server (VWS).

Some of the features of Microsoft FrontPage are:

  • FrontPage Explorer makes uploading files to your webspace easier. If can also keep track of file changes that you make and update any new data automatically.
  • Active elements such as web counters, hover buttons, search engines, web page forms which output either to a file or email.
FrontPage Express Users

If you are using FrontPage Express (sometimes called FrontPad), which came as part of Internet Explorer 4 on some systems, we recommend that you do not use the extensions, unless you absolutely have to. In order to use FrontPage Express with FrontPage extensions you need to use the Microsoft Publishing wizard, all support for which should be located either in the help files or the Microsoft website.

FrontPage Extension Requirements

Before you can have FrontPage extensions installed on your webspace you need both a Domain Name and VWS (Virtual Web Server) at GWI.

If the address of your website was previously

www.gwi.net/~your-username

you will not be able to have FrontPage extensions installed. These addresses only work with our servers which do not support FrontPage extensions (these addresses are sometimes called 'tilde' addresses, because of the symbol which should be typed before your username).

If you want a full domain name (such as www.your-domain.com), and don't already have one, you'll need to purchase this along with the VWS (Virtual Web Server).

FrontPage Extension Installation

To request FrontPage extensions, you will need to complete our FrontPage Extension Request Form. (There is a one-time installation fee of $25.) Once the extensions have been installed for your page, GWI will notify you that the installation is complete and you will be required to publish the site using a Microsoft FrontPage Client.

This means that once installed, your web space may appear empty until you upload the files which constitute your website. If you already had a VWS, but were simply having extensions installed, then in most cases you will just need to change how you publish pages from that point on. If there are any difficulties installing the extensions, we will contact you directly.

GWI highly recommends that you make a full backup of your site before we install FrontPage extensions on it.

If you have any questions regarding FrontPage Extensions, please contact our Sales Department at services@gwi.net or call 866-494-2020.
